How to Clean Car Battery Corrosion

Battery Leaking

Inspecting your car’s battery on a regular basis is an important maintenance step you can do right from your Hagatna driveway. If you have noticed some corrosion on the battery, don’t be alarmed. In this guide from Atkins Kroll Guam, we’ll show you how to clean car battery corrosion. What causes car battery corrosion, and how can you remove corrosion from a car battery safely? Atkins Kroll Guam has the details below.

What Causes Car Battery Corrosion?

Time is the main cause of battery corrosion. Your battery is constantly heating and cooling as you travel around Dededo and Yigo. The battery releases hydrogen gasses through ventilation, and these gasses mix with the surrounding material and create a substance at the connection point. That substance is corrosion, which is a white powdery material. It can sometimes also be a combination of green, blue, and teal.

How to Remove Corrosion from a Car Battery

There are two primary methods on how to remove corrosion from a car battery. You can opt for a solution purchased at an auto parts store, or you could create a solution yourself with common household materials. No matter which option you prefer, be sure to put on gloves, goggles, and a respirator when handling the solution or creating your own to protect yourself. You should continue to wear the protective equipment when you’re working around battery acid, electric currents, and rust.

Professional battery cleaner

  • Purchase a battery cleaner at your local auto parts store. Spray the solution liberally on the affected surface of the battery. Use a wire brush to remove the corrosion until the battery is clean.

DIY battery cleaning solution

  • Remove the connectors from the battery terminal. Start by pouring baking soda on the corrosion to neutralize the acids. Add a bit of water to catalyze a reaction. Dry with a paper towel and use a scrub sponge to brush the affected area.

If you want to avoid future corrosion, you can apply a rust inhibitor spray, a spray battery protector, or an anti-corrosion gel on the newly-clean battery.
