The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

Gas pumps in a row

Are you wondering about the difference between premium and regular gas? You’re not alone. While the two options share some similarities, there are a few differences that set them apart. Compare premium vs. regular gas with Atkins Kroll Guam to see which option best suits your driving needs and budget.

Premium vs. Regular Gas: What is Premium Gasoline?

Premium and regular gasoline are both produced from crude oil and both are combustible. The main difference between premium and regular gas is octane level. Most premium gasoline has an octane level of 90 or above. An added perk is that premium gasoline helps keep your engine cleaner so it releases less pollution into the atmosphere.

Premium vs. Regular Gas: What is Regular Unleaded Gasoline?

Regular unleaded gasoline is the most common type of gasoline found around Hagatna and Dededo. It works well for most vehicles and is better for the environment and your health than gasoline containing lead. It has an octane level of 87.

What Type of Gasoline Does Your Vehicle Need?

Now that you have compared premium vs. regular gas, how do you know which one is right for your vehicle?

  • Octane Rating: The higher the octane level, the less chance there is of engine knocking. This issue can lead to expensive vehicle damage. Pre-ignition is not as common with premium gasoline.
  • Engine Suitability: Regular unleaded gas burns faster than premium gas. This is why it is good for engines with lower compression ratios. Engines with high compression ratios should use premium gasoline.
  • Price: Premium gas can be as much as 20 to 40 cents more per gallon than regular unleaded gas. However, it’s well worth the extra cost if your vehicle needs it.
  • If your car does not require premium gas, using it instead of regular gasoline will not boost the performance or the longevity of the vehicle.
  • If your vehicle requires premium gas, regular gas generally will not cause harm. However, if you start to hear engine knocking with the use of regular gasoline, you will need to start using premium instead.
  • Premium gas could be required for vehicles that utilize turbochargers.
