AK partners with local government to clean up abandoned vehicles

Villages across the island can soon look forward to cleaner, and safer roadways as Atkins Kroll partners with the Government of Guam to provide financial support and strengthen government resources to remove and properly dispose of abandoned and end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) throughout the island in 2026. This collaboration advances community safety, island beautification and environmentally responsible recycling efforts. 

The partnership was formalized today with the signing of a memorandum of understanding by Atkins Kroll leadership, including Clark Boswell, Vice President and General Manager of AK Guam & Saipan; Ernie Galito, Business Development & Sustainability Director; and Trina Cruz, Marketing and Brand Engagement Director. Government of Guam representatives in attendance included Acting Governor of Guam Joshua F. Tenorio, Diego Mendiola, Acting Administrator of Guam Economic Development Authority (GEDA); and Vincent Arriola, Director of the Department of Public Works (DPW).

“As Guam’s first and oldest corporation, we are proud to support initiatives that strengthen our island and invest in meaningful local partnerships,” said Clark Boswell, Vice President and General Manager of AK Guam & Saipan. “This collaboration allows us to contribute resources where they are needed most in hopes of making a lasting, positive impact on our communities.” 

“Abandoned vehicles have been a growing concern for the island and are not only an eyesore but a safety concern. We look forward to seeing them removed from the roadways, recycled, and transformed into creating greener, safer spaces for everyone,” added Boswell.  

As part of the agreement, Atkins Kroll will contribute $400 for every hybrid electric vehicle or battery electric vehicle sold by the dealership. Contributions will be made to the Abandoned Vehicle Fund via GEDA and based on verified ELV disposals that DPW completes. 

The Government of Guam will be responsible for disposing the abandoned vehicles and ELVs. An ELV is considered disposed when it has been removed and delivered to a licensed processor or recycler for processing, crushing, or export in compliance with applicable laws. 

Village mayors and community members can assist the Department of Public Works in identifying eligible ELVs and coordinating access and outreach. Atkins Kroll retails hybrid and battery electric vehicles that include Toyota Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), Toyota, Lexus, BMW Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). 

Community Matters 

The public-private partnership builds on AK’s long-standing history of collaboration with the Government of Guam and investment to the island. As part of its centennial celebration in 2014, AK supported the Guam Police Department by donating a lease of 10 Toyota Prius vehicles to its fleet. As part of today’s formal signing, AK also presented a $1,914 donation as an initial good-faith contribution to support early program mobilization. The donation amount signifies the year Atkins Kroll was founded.

AK’s ongoing sustainability initiatives 

Sustainability at Atkins Kroll Guam is more than a goal but an ongoing responsibility here at the dealership from vehicle ownership through end‑of‑life. Atkins Kroll has systems and practices in place to reduce environmental impact and protect Guam’s natural resources.
